STEFANIA NAZZAL X PARK HOUSE

STEFANIA NAZZAL X PARK HOUSE

About the Exhibition
Lucid Dreams. A color turns and shifts in gradient. Beyond a plane’s oval window, the horizon stretches endlessly. As the sun sets beneath hazy clouds, the mind wanders. These are the fleeting moments that Stefania Nazzal captures in her latest body of work. In a kind of fullness that is attained when one empties the mind and escapes, she alludes to states of consciousness that impart a sharp sensory awareness. As dreamy texts contemplate other ways of being, sheer luminescence promises a world of our own making. It is a world that Nazzal understands.

Where color floods the senses Nazzal points to natural phenomena that are all-encompassing. In a deeply layered artistic process, she meticulously chooses every component and shift in tone as a means of dissecting colors we see in nature and those we don’t. There’s a notion of plenitude in the way hues conjoin and shimmer. Her seemingly contained works incorporate a rich palette of PVC strings that teeter between solidity and fluidity. She has mastered materials, which, known for more pliable forms in friendship bracelets and keychains, are now sculptural flows that stream like thoughts.

In a new series of work, Is This The True Story (2024), Nazzal moves from the sky as her canvas to a monochrome page in which she invites the viewer in. In three gestural forms akin to crumpled paper, she subtly distorts her streaming lines, removing elements of her former work in order to begin anew. Color is subdued and gradient disappears. A steely pastel blue is interrupted by the shock of a bright orange on the backside. By not revealing the full image as flat, Nazzal marks an in-between state, starting and stopping to witness and question reality as one might in a lucid dream.

In this subjective world, a sense of control is relinquished and an unknown narrative unfolds, Revealing traces of her creative process, her new series offers the viewer a peek into the capsule of her mind, in which movement towards another story is shown as a progression, a freeze frame of three moments in time — the idea of suspension. The works unravel and open out from the wall and away from the notion of a solid frame. The plane window turns into a more abstract representation of change and color.

About the Artist
Stefania Nazzal (b. 1976) is a Swiss artist who currently lives and works in Dubai. Nazzal trained at the Cyprus Academy of Art and at Central Saint Martins in London. Working in mixed media, Nazzal weaves together deep colours to create dreamlike often paradoxical compositions, through a meticulous creative process. Through her practice she performs a reflection, refraction and dispersion of light, constructing whimsical colourscapes that depict the spectrum of light in multicolored forms. Driven by nature and natural phenomena, Nazzal strives to craft diverse realms.

Kaleta Doolin, Park House 2023

Kaleta Doolin, Park House 2023

About the Exhibition
Over the course of her career, Dallas-based artist Kaleta Doolin has developed an enigmatic style to facilitate her intersectional social critique. Casting traditionally domestic items in steel and iron, her sculptural work problematizes cultural equations of femininity with delicacy. Rusting doilies and patinaed florals carry on the legacies of their referents, putting Doolin in dialogue with artists like Betye Saar, Méret Oppenheim and Louise Bourgeois. At Park House, Steel Lace speaks to the artist’s new and existing accomplishments in sculpture, textiles, installation and conceptual art. Her inventive use of textiles — either as stencils, molds or mixed with metals — harnesses the emotional power of objects and symbols, denaturing their biases and grounding them in a contemporary feminist sensibility. Doolin draws on the accomplishments of those before her, encouraging future generations to eschew the oppressive constraints of domesticity as it was, and still is, exercised on women.

About the Artist
Kaleta Doolin (b. 1950) lives and works in Dallas, TX. Doolin is a feminist artist known for her interdisciplinary and critical application of industrial materials and found objects. In the foreword to Doolin’s forthcoming book, Jessica Morgan, director of the Dia Art Foundation, writes, “Delighting in the act of transformation, in Doolin’s hands hard becomes pliable; solid becomes porous; and delicate becomes durable.” Her work can be found in collections at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England. In addition to her ongoing work as an artist, Doolin was co-director of the 5501 Columbia Art Center from 1992 to 2001 and was the co-founder of the Texas African American Photography Archives.

About the Gallery
Erin Cluley Gallery is a contemporary art gallery representing emerging, mid-career, and established artists from Dallas and the United States. The gallery presents a provocative program of artists working in both traditional and alternative forms including painting, sculpture, new media, photography, sculptural installation and public intervention. In April 2021, Cluley opened Cluley Projects – a satellite location in West Dallas acting as an incubator space focusing on regional artists and providing a platform for discovery and mentorship.

California Dreaming

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION & ARTISTS
We have partnered with the esteemed global auction house, Sotheby’s, to present an exhibition of works created in the studios of Mixografia, a Los Angeles based print publisher. The selection comprises editions produced in the past 20 years by well-known pioneering artists from the Pop-Art and Conceptual art movements such as John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha and Alex Israel, amongst others; each work representing the artist’s recognizable visual language within the context of Mixografia’s unique three-dimensional print making processes. For each of the artists in the show, print making is an integral part of their artistic output, an essential way to explore alternate media and push the boundaries of artistic expression.

For decades, Mixografia has distinguished itself as the publisher of complex works redefining the boundaries of the printmaking medium. Originally established in 1968 as Taller de Gráphica in Mexico City by Luis Remba, and based in California since the 1980s. The publisher attracts artists from all over the world, setting new standards in graphic arts, owing to their liberation from the strictly two-dimensional process of works on paper. Mixografia has exhibited in museum shows internationally and their publications hold prominent positions in the printmaking careers of important contemporary artists such as Ed Ruscha, John Baldessari and Tom Wesselmann. Sotheby’s is proud to partner with Mixografia, offering access to its prints directly from the publisher.

This diverse show includes works by six acclaimed artists:
 - John Baldessari (1931-2020)
- Dario Escobar (B. 1971)
 - Alex Israel (B. 1982)
 - Ed Ruscha (b. 1937)
 - Donald Sultan (B. 1971)
 - Tom Wesselman (1931-2004)

PLEASE SIGN IN ALL GUESTS by Nick Mele

ABOUT THE ARTIST...
Referred to as "a modern day Slim Aarons" by Town & Country and Veranda Magazine, Mele has had his photographs featured in a myriad of online and print publications including The New York Times, The Financial Times, Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Vogue and Vanity Fair. His commercial clients include brands such as Ralph Lauren, Sam Edelman, J.McLaughlin and Lilly Pulitzer, as well as several high end hotels and interior designers. Mele's first book, A Newport Summer, was published in May 2022 by Vendome Press. His second book, Palm Beach Living, is due out in February 2023.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION...
Nick Mele presents his first collection of limited edition fine art prints. The photo series, titled PLEASE SIGN IN ALL GUESTS, is a flamboyant ode to classic Palm Beach. Primarily a lifestyle, fashion and interior design photographer, Mele is best known for his whimsical take on luxury and elegance. This new series of photographs marks a shift to a new style of decadent storytelling. Mele's irreverent take on timeless, all-American glamour is immediately recognizable, but in this series, he moves past the magazine pages, spinning tales of surreal characters in dreamlike domestic spaces. Documenting a lifestyle at once familiar yet fantastic, Mele's imagery feels like a fanciful peek into the rarefied spaces of Palm Beach society. As viewers, we are offered a glimpse into improbably beautiful spaces that are normally inaccessible to the public eye.

In this series of large-scale archival photographs, some of Palm Beach's most storied locales are brought to life through Mele's wit and theatricality. Mele's dramatic use of bold color and composition highlight the Colony Hotel's glamorous and luxurious interiors, while Duck's Nest, the historic home of founding Palm Beach homesteaders, becomes the elegant backdrop for serene scenes of domestic life. Through these backdrops and more, we are momentarily free to daydream of another world, in cotton-candy pinks and sky blues, that exists just behind the wrought iron gates.

“EVE OF DESTRUCTION” BY JEN RAY

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Jen Ray creates paintings, performances, and sound works celebrating female self-determination. Drawing inspiration and symbolism from a wide range of socio-political and cultural references, Jen Ray challenges static or reverential perceptions of feminism and encourages ongoing discussions about gender, intersectionality, and identity. The presentation Eve of Destruction features works of art that hint at the real perils women face every day... in many of the works, female figures are glamorously dressed in battle gear, and a flower encrusted porcelain axe hangs on the wall within easy reach of the warriors. Although the works are presented as fantasy, they symbolize real-world events and pressures. The exhibition continues the artist's interest and exploration of the cycles of destruction and re-invention on both a grand scale and on the personal side.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jen Ray (b. 1970, American) has spent the last several years living and working in Berlin, where she is represented by Wentrup gallery. Rayʼs work has been exhibited widely throughout Germany, including shows at Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Kunstverein Kassel, and KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin. Jen Rays drawings are militantly detailed filigrees of judicious line and color; the artist's hand enunciates sparring Amazonian women, who inhabit decaying, semi-surrealist and strangely beautiful wastelands. In addition to her works on paper, Ray orchestrates lavish and provocative performances in which the female protagonists of her drawings come to life.

Hexton Gallery: Right Place by Marcos Acosta

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Marcos Acosta has been exploring the traditional genre of landscape painting for 20 years. As a native of Córdoba, Argentina, he absorbs and digests the visual aspects of his territory with an exquisite level of detail, questioning the relationship between men and nature through his irreverent geometries. This recent collection of paintings follows on the heals of his last institutional exhibition Outside the Wind, Inside The World  and addresses the universal connection that lies beneath everything that is.

Acosta explores the notion that, at a subatomic level, humans are made of the same elements as everything around us. As such, the artist finds himself in the natural elements that he portrays and offers us an opportunity to do the same. These works propose an integration with nature, not a separation from it, and in so doing erases the tension between culture and nature. The places he depicts in his works are outside of any specific physical space and instead formed by an echo or a dream, further uniting us and the landscape. The Right Place is no place and every place, encompassing a common essence that is, at its core, simply light.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in Cordóba, Argentina in 1980, Marcos developed his artistic activity in multiple fields, mainly painting, drawing, engraving and sculpture. He began his studies at the age of 10 and attended different private workshops, alternating with stages of self-taught production until the age of 16. In 1998, he began his studies at the Faculty of Arts of the National University of Cordóba, Argentina, from which he graduated with a BA in Painting. Between 1998 and 2000, he attended the workshop of master artist Carlos Peiteado, with whom he further perfected his drawing, painting and composition. Since 2001, Acosta has had over 35 solo exhibitions, more than 115 collective exhibitions and has received several awards and honors in Argentina. Acosta’s work is represented in many private collections and public art institutions around the world.

ABOUT HEXTON
Hexton Gallery was founded by Bob Chase in 1995 and expanded upon the Chase family’s long-standing role in gallery development, artist representation, and extensive work in 20th century master prints and figurative sculpture. The gallery originated at 78th and Madison on New York’s Upper East Side, and relocated to Chicago several years later. The gallery’s archive, art production, and marketing teams reside in Chicago, while the main gallery now operates at its Cooper Avenue location in Aspen, Colorado. Hexton has produced over two hundred exhibitions internationally in the last twenty-five years, both solo and in collaboration with other gallery partners. The gallery continues to participate extensively in domestic and international art fairs in support of its mid-career and established artists.
